Hot Water Beach is on the East Coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. Natural hot springs bubble up through the sand, but can only be accessed at low tide. For several hours around the low tide, dozens of people descend on the hot spot on the beach with spades and dig themselves small hot pools in the sand. The result is a free hot mineral spa pool - until the returning tide finally sends a cold wave over the whole thing. The crowd is watched over by two young women who are surf lifesavers.

This painting spans the decades and several changes of style. It was started in 1999 on Waiheke Island, where the hardboard panels were cut to shape and assembled in the frame. In 2005 the sky and mountains were painted, and in 2016 the foreground was completed.
It is painted on three layers, with the mountains and the foreground hills being on separate jigsaw-cut hardboard layers, giving a 3d effect overall. The sky was made by pouring paint, and the foreground by various methods including spattering, cutouts, and marker pens.

Planet Rangitoto shows Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf around the edge of a circular sea.
The landmasses shown are (anti-clockwise from the top): Rangitoto Island, Waiheke, Motutapu and Rakino Islands, The Noises Islands, Mt Moehau on the Coromandel Peninsula, Tiritiri Matangi Island, Little Barrier Island (Hauturu), Whangapraoa Peninsula and Kawau Island. Most of the painting was done about ten years ago, with the two inner circles and the thin line circles being added in 2016. The thin line circles were drawn with Molotow markers, the first time I have tried this relatively new art product.

A lumpy bed awoke me at dawn – I went outside and took some photos with my cellphone. When shooting into the rising sun, the low-res phone cam converted most of the image to black and white, and heavily pixcellated it. I like the effect and thought pixcellation could influence painting as a kind of modern techno-computer effect. The view is looking east up Bon Accord Harbour. The wharf shown is Lidgard Wharf, and I walked out onto the wharf and also took two photos looking back the other way, which were the inspiration behind another of my Kawau paintings, Kawau Island Just After Sunrise.

This painting shows Lidgard House and Lidgard Wharf at Smelting House Bay, Kawau Island, New Zealand. Lidgard House is shown twice. It is based on two photographs taken just after sunrise one October morning. At the same time, I pointed the camera the other way and took the photograph upon which I based another of my Kawau paintings, Dawn Pixcellation on Kawau Island. The photo for that painting was taken from a point on the beach in this painting, about a quarter of the way in from the right.

I was lucky enough to be invited sailing on the yacht called Blast Furnace, owned by Juan, a friend of a friend. Anyway, it was a breezy day in late summer, I think it was April, 2007. We sailed from Westhaven, around North Head, and up the Rangitoto Channel – where I took the photo that led to this painting. My low angle may or may not have been influenced by one or two cans of on-board cerveza.
